Oxidative stress phenomenon occurs at the level of cells. It is this oxidative stress which can deteriorate the healthy cells to die eventually. It has been observed that cancer uses this oxidative stress to prove beneficial for itself. The natural production of ROS follows the oxygen metabolism. ROS stands for Reactive Oxygen Species. These reactive oxygen species play a vital role in the regulation of homeostasis. Homeostasis is better known as the biological functioning. Reactive oxygen species also play an essential role in cell signalling process.

It is when the reactive oxygen species reaches its abnormal levels; they give rise to the phenomenon of oxidative stress. It is this oxidative stress phenomenon that gives rise to the processes of cellular ageing and deterioration. In place of the healthy cells, the cancer cells are in dire need of higher levels of the reactive oxygen species. The higher the levels of reactive oxygen species, higher will be the acceleration rate of the cancerous cells. As a result of the higher rate of acceleration, the cancerous cells will start spreading more rapidly.

Currently, the researchers from the Georgia Cancer Center in Augusta and the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University are working on a project to modify the mechanism of higher ROS levels. They are dedicated towards development of an intriguing strategy for use in cancer therapy. The research is directed towards increasing the ROS levels to such an extent that it would eventually lead to the death of cancerous cells.

The findings of the research mark its presence in the journal Cell Metabolism.
