What do you do with the stuff you don’t use at home? Buy Nothing is a community created with the idea of helping people connect with one another, share and give/receive gratitude. I joined my local group back in 2018 when I was pregnant, so I could look for things I didn’t want to spend money on stuff I would use for a short period of time. The best part of joining the group was that all of a sudden, the main focus was not on the financial benefit, instead Buy Nothing is all about creating an economy that’s all about forming connections between people. I loved the group so much that I became an administrator for my neighborhood group. It was great to also purge all the stuff I no longer needed.
It’s more important than ever for us to forge amazing, powerful communities and appreciate one another. This helps create a gift economy where everyone gets to enjoy other people’s company, forge friendships and connections, while also getting to meet new people.

Additionally, Buy Nothing is bringing a gift economy, and it’s not a charity. Instead, wealth is measured based on how many personal connections are made. It’s more important than ever for us to take action and truly focus on the things that we want to achieve. That doesn’t mean it’s hard to do, even if it feels impossible.
At the end of the day, what you want to pursue is a high level of happiness, human connection and the ability to share stories. It helps quite a lot and the best part is that we get to maintain that sense of being inclusive and bringing it to new heights all the time. Every community has a large amount of wealth and generosity. It’s up to us to harness that and put it to good use.
