The New Year is a great opportunity to turn the page on your life and accomplish things you’ve never before thought possible. According to Michael Patrick, The Property Advocates COO and managing attorney, developing a new mindset is key to change.

By clearing your mind and having a positive outlook on the year ahead, you’ll be better positioned to attack the year’s challenges head-on. In fact, many studies have shown that simply changing your mindset will help you feel better and be better prepared for what’s ahead.

Here are some ways that you can approach the New Year with a new mindset.

Be Thankful for What Happened

There’s no doubt that you’ve faced some challenges in the last year. It’s also likely that not every situation you experienced in 2022 resulted in a positive outcome.

But it’s very important to start the New Year fresh and not allow negative feelings about what happened last year to carry over into the new year.

“Most of us have faced significant challenges over the last few years, from pandemic-related stresses to economic stresses and more,” says Michael Patrick, The Property Advocates COO, and managing attorney. “That being said, you don’t want to allow the events of the past to cloud your future. Instead of reflecting on negative aspects of the past year, be grateful for the things you have and express that gratitude out loud and to others.”

Set Realistic Goals

Many people make New Year’s resolutions for what they want to change or accomplish in the year ahead. These resolutions can be great, but they often fail because they are too lofty.

Michael Patrick says that it’s important to set realistic goals if you want to achieve your goals and check off your resolutions. To this point, set specific goals for which you can track your progress.

For instance, if you want to get healthier in the New Year, you could set a goal of losing 20 pounds in six months, or going to the gym three times per week, every week. These are both achievable and trackable, compared to a general goal of “being healthier.”

When you’re able to track your progress toward your goals, you’ll be able to celebrate small victories along the way.

Establish Positive Habits

When you establish positive habits and incorporate them into your routine every day, they can have trickle-down effects on your entire life. For instance, practicing mindfulness techniques such as meditation can be very useful for reducing acute stress during the day, but it also can have long-lasting positive results for your entire life.

Meditating may not be for everyone, of course, nor are the typical mindfulness practices. The key is to not focus so much on following what others consider positive habits but establish ones that work for you.

This could mean compiling a daily To Do List and sticking to it, going for a walk, eating healthier, and avoiding negative situations at work, home, and online.
