You’ve probably heard of James Morgan before. He made headlines playing for the Phantoms. However, you might not know that he also operates his father’s butcher shop. The Stilton Butchers. Not only that, but he, and his team, faced a calamity just like everyone else during the Covid-19 pandemic, and instead of the shop his father opened in 1978 closing for good, James saved it. He took it from the brink of collapse and elevated it to an industry-inspiring new level.
Online butcher services have been a thing for a while. In the US, and in various European countries, you’ve been able to order a meat order online and have it delivered for almost a decade. However, they’ve always been tiny, localized, services with limited appeal.
James Morgan and Stilton Butchers have changed that.
First, the business was days away from descending a never-ending downward spiral. 60 jobs were on the line, and a pillar of the local economy was about to go under. Stilton Butchers provided catering to countless pubs and events in the area. Then, James got the idea to move the business online, and it all went up from there.
The online move allowed Stilton Butchers to reach a much larger audience. Instead of only catering to local pubs in Petersborough, it went nationwide. Anyone could purchase Stilton Butchers meat and enjoy an amazingly fresh meal. It didn’t stop there, though.
Now, with the revenue generated by the eCommerce transition, a preparation centre has been built, and it’s already staffed by 10 employees with five more on the way. This will increase the efficiency of Stilton Butchers tenfold, and it’s creating more jobs.
However, expansion is also on James Morgan’s mind. There is already a Durham location set to launch. That will create new jobs for the area, boost the local economy, and grow Stilton’s even more.
While not a concrete move yet, there is also a third physical butcher shop in the works. Petersborough city centre will receive its own Stilton Butchers location.
Online butchers have been a thing for a while, but no one has taken it as far as James Morgan has.
