Mumbai Indians defeated the Kings XI Punjab by 3 runs to stay alive in this year’s IPL. While it has become really difficult for KXIP to now qualify for the playoffs. Jasprit Bumrah won the ‘Man of the Match’ for his magnificent display of death bowling.
Kings XI Punjab won the toss and took the obvious decision of fielding first where they two changes in their playing XI as both Manoj Tiwary and Yuvraj Singh came back in place of Karun Nair and Mayank Agarwal. MI made just one change as Kieron Pollard played instead of JP Duminy.
Mumbai Indians started very well with the bat after some brilliant shots from the bat of Suryakumar Yadav. But they suffered a small batting collapse as they were reduced to 71-4 where they lost these wickets in a span of some 30 odd runs. But after a brilliant partnership between Krunal Pandya (32) and Kieron Pollard (50), MI was able to post a good total of 186-8 on the board.
Andrew Tye again bowled a wonderful bowling spell where he took four wickets after giving just 16 runs in his quota of four overs. Skipper Ravi Ashwin also bowled well as he recorded the match figures of 3-0-18-2.
Punjab also began their batting in somewhat similar to Mumbai but soon Gayle got out after playing a quick knock of 18 runs. But after him, KL Rahul and Aaron Finch played for a massive partnership of 111 before the latter got out for 46 runs. Though Rahul played till the 19th over but there was no other batsman who took the responsibility of finishing the game as his superb knock of 94 went in vain.
Even after having wickets in hand, Punjab was not able to chase the target. For this, Jasprit Bumrah played the major role of destruction as achieved the match figures of 4-0-15-3 which included the key 17th and 19th overs where the major damage was done.
After this win, Mumbai Indians jumped to the fourth place in the Points Table while KXIP slipped to the sixth spot. If MI is able to defeat DD in their next game then it is pretty much likely that they will qualify for the playoffs, keeping their run rate in mind. Punjab can only just cross their fingers, win their next match and hope the other results go in their favor as their luck is not just only in their hands.
