Chennai Super Kings defeated the Kings XI Punjab by 5 wickets to crush their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs. Lungi Ngidi won the ‘Man of the Match’ for his outstanding bowling spell of 4-1-10-4.
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and opted to field first. They made just a single change as Faf du Plessis played instead of Shane Watson. Punjab also made a few changes in their batting. Once, it was decided that Punjab will bat, it was calculated that they have to win by 53 runs to qualify for the playoffs.
Kings XI Punjab started horribly as they lost three wickets for just 16 runs. Manoj Tiwary (34) and David Miller (35) held the innings well before Karun Nair took the charge for his knock of 54 runs off just 26 balls to help his team post a competitive total of 153/10 on the board.
While Lungi Ngidi did the major damage, but Bravo and Thakur also took two wickets each. Deepak Chahar and Ravindra Jadeja also bowled economically well, taking a wicket each.
Punjab began their bowling brilliantly as they got the wicket of in-form Ambati Rayudu in the second over. du Plessis and Billings also got out in the powerplay but after them Suresh Raina played well. Harbhajan Singh also, who got a promotion played well for his knock of 19 runs. Another player got promotion on the batting order who was Deepak Chahar and that decision did wonders as he scored 39 runs off just 20 deliveries.
MS hit the winning six to finish the match. Suresh Raina also played till the end for his knock of 61* to get his mojo back in this season which was missing a bit in this season. Ankit Rajpoot bowled a magnificent spell of 4-1-19-2 in the beginning of the innings where he made the match tilt in the Punjab’s favor but it never happened.
