If you’re struggling to overcome the modern, sedentary life and get moving again, there’s a simple, scientifically proven way to get it done: walking. But of course, there is a right way to do it. Eugene Pallisco, a certified trainer and expert on human motion, offers a few pointers on how to get active again through walking.

Be Intentional

As you transition from a sedentary lifestyle to a more activity-centered life, you’re going to want to pay attention to what your body is telling you. You’ll need to take mental notes on how you move and try to replicate on one side what your stride is doing on the other.

When you break it down, as the human body moves in a walking motion, it is intentionally launching from one foot to the other. The activity is inherently unbalanced unless the other side is present to catch the energy the first side releases.

As you walk, pay attention to how your body is moving and try to keep the motion as symmetrical as possible. Swinging your arms, even in an exaggerated way at first, will help you achieve this ideal.

The Symmetry of the Human Body

Did you know that your phone can help you track the asymmetry of your stride? Many smartphones have an app that can help you track your walk asymmetry.

Your symmetry is ideal if it’s at 0%. If you tend to walk your dog or carry a bag on the same side every time, you may find your asymmetry well above zero. Try switching sides with the leash or the purse; you may see an improvement.

As you begin to walk more, check your stride. Are you swinging your arms? Arm swing helps you to transition from one side to the other as you move. It helps your body’s motion to stay smooth and reduces the chance of injury. Make sure to match your left side with your right.

It’s a good idea to check your shoes for uneven wear, too. If one shoe is more worn than another, you may need to pay more attention to how you’re walking and try to even things up in your stride.

Use Unilateral Exercises

A great way to increase your strength while evening out the symmetry of your stride is to perform unilateral exercises. This is just a medical way of describing a one-sided focus in a repetitive motion.

A practical way you can experience this is to stand barefoot with one foot on the floor while you raise the other and attempt to hold the position for ten seconds. When you do the same on the other side, you’ll probably see that you’re more well-balanced on your right or left foot.

If you’re in need of an easy, proven way to get your exercise in, try walking. You will enjoy where your steps take you.
