Cannabis or weed or marijuana possesses both recreational and medical importance. The oil extracted from cannabis is known as the Cannabis oils. In the unprocessed stage, the cannabis oil resembles the composition of the cannabis plants with hundred active ingredients. The two pre-dominantly used active Cannabis compounds are CBD or cannabidiol, and THC or delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol. A rich source of CBD is hemp plant oil extract while skunk plants are rich in THC active compounds.
The THC compounds are mostly for the recreational cannabis users while the medicinal oil mainly contains CBD.
What is Cannabidiol?
Cannabidiol or CBD is an anticonvulsant. The clinical trials worked out in the United States, and Europe is indicative of the pharmaceutical use of CBD in the treatment of Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. Both the Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome represents the two severe forms of epilepsy in children. Dravet, as well as Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, are challenging to treat with the existing drugs available for epilepsy. Generally, the use of cannabidiol or CBD is on a safer side. However, some clinical trials have reported few side effects of CBD use. To list a few side-effects of CBD use are lightheadedness, altered enzymatic activities in liver and dryness in the mouth.
Britain is the only place where the Cannabis oil is legally available for sale purpose. However, the amount of the delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol in such cannabis oil products must be within 0.05%. However, the MHRA recently made an announcement there. It says that even medicinally significant CBD cannot be sold before it clears the clinical testing procedure. After passing the clinical trials, such medicinally important CBD must undergo a thorough safety check before legalising its sale. MHRA is the medicine regulator in Britain.
Moreover, this month will witness the approval stage of Epidiolex from the USFDA as it has undergone the necessary clinical trials. Epidiolex is manufactured by GW Pharmaceuticals and is known to contain a CBD base.
