K. L. Saigal or Kundan Lal Saigal is famous in Hindi films as a matchless singer, fans also call him a great actor due to acting in a few films like Devdas (1936). Kundan Lal Saigal can be called the first superstar of Hindi cinema. To the musical films of the 1930s and 40s, the audience used to be drawn to his intense acting and talented singing.
Kundan Lal Saigal among his favorites K. L. Saigal was famous. He was born on 11th April 1904 in Nawanshahr, Jammu. His father Amarchand Saigal was a Tahsildar of the court in Jammu city. From childhood, Saigal’s interest was in the song-music. His mother, Kesarbai Saigal, had a lot of interest in music as well as in religious activities.
K. L. Saigal Career
Saigal had not learned music from any masters, but firstly he learned the tricks of music from a Sufi saint Salman Yusuf. Saigal’s early education was very simple. He had to leave his studies in the middle and he also had a timekeeper’s job in the railway. Later, he also worked as a salesman in the company of typewriting machine named Remington. He sang in the Raag Darbari, listening to him, Ustad praised him with a loud voice.
In the year 1930, the BN Government of New Theater of Kolkata gave him a chance to work on 200 rupees monthly. Here, he met musician RC Boral, who was quite impressed by Saigal’s talent. Initially, he got an opportunity to work in an Urdu film ‘Mohabbat Ki Aansoo‘, which was released in the year 1932. In 1932, ‘Subah Ka Sitara‘ and ‘Zinda Lash‘, two of his film as an actor, were also released, but these films did not get any special recognition.
