The leading streaming platform BroadwayHD commemorated its ten years of bringing live theater to homes around the globe at a dazzling party at SVA Theatre in New York City. Tony Award-winning producers Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley established BroadwayHD to celebrate their platform’s 10th anniversary by hosting a glamorous red carpet reception as well as an exclusive screening and a memorable panel discussion featuring some of Broadway’s top stars.
The celebration began with a spectacular red carpet event attended by both theater legends and emerging stars. The event featured highlights from the Pippin 50th Anniversary Concert which showcased a remarkable production recorded at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London. Tony Award winner Alex Newell took on the role of the Leading Player while Olivier Award winner Patricia Hodge appeared as Berthe alongside WhatsOnStage Award winners Lucie Jones and Cedric Neal to celebrate Stephen Schwartz’s classic musical through the concert.
Julie James led an energetic panel discussion that featured Tony Award winners and nominees such as Stephen Schwartz, Alex Newell, Ben Vereen, John Rubinstein, Jac Yarrow, and Tovah Feldshuh. The panelists described their journey of staging Broadway’s beloved musical Pippin while discussing the obstacles they faced and their successful achievements.
Ben Vereen originally played the Leading Player role before giving a moving tribute to the iconic Bob Fosse by stating “Bob would be quite proud.” Bob would be pleased that his unique choreographic style persists and that we continue to perform his work.
The evening reached a peak when Patricia Hodge delivered an energetic rendition of No Time at All which led directly into a spontaneous audience sing-along that spread unity and joy among all present. The celebration honored BroadwayHD’s historical accomplishments while also emphasizing its current goal to make theater available to all people irrespective of location or economic status.
